When I read old blog posts I am alarmed by the number of mistakes and errors I make. I do have an occasional proof-reader but it's not something I can rely on and I really, really need to learn to fix these things myself. I'm attributing blame to touch typing. Touch typing is marvellous, in that it allows me to transfer ideas onto the page almost as fast as I think them. I am not consciously aware of typing, I simply think a word and this word appears on the screen as if by magic. So when I write a blog post, I am concentrating on the content rather than the physical drudgery of getting that content onto the computer. It is how I've been able to write over 20,000 words on this blog in the last month alone whilst holding down a full time job, a social life and an addiction to Rock Bank while continuing to feed my voracious online reading habit.
But, it seems, there's a bit of a downside. Typically when I write my blog my fingers are on autopilot. It is not a conscious activity. Sometimes the word that appears on the screen is not quite the word I had in mind.
For example, in the 'E-Cig Phenomenon' post, I typed "objective" instead of the word "object" that I was thinking, but I had absolutely no idea I'd done that until I read it today. It seems that the faster I type the more my subconscious appears to start adding its own creative 'flair' to what I'm writing. Sometimes if I'm trying to type something and my thoughts go off on a tangent, then what appears on the screen is an impossible muddle of two different concepts.
I find it an interesting and somewhat embarrassing phenomenon.
I'm going to resolve to take more care to proof-read my posts from now on. I just wanted to state, for the record, that if you see things like this in my writing it's not because I do not speak English as my first language, nor does it mean that I am uneducated and illiterate (although, technically, I am under-educated) - it's just my subconscious doing its best to make me look like an idiot. It does mean that I'm very sloppy and haphazard when it comes to quality control of my writing though. Can't escape from that, but then you get what you pay for, right? :)
That is all.
